- 02Materials chosen for salt airMahogany, cedar, and capped composite each age differently on a Cape lot, and we tell you plainly how each one behaves on your exposure. Hidden fasteners, stainless hardware, and taped joists keep water out of the framing, which is where a deck actually fails.

We start with the door you walk out of, where the sun lands at five o'clock, and how many chairs need to fit. Grill clearance, stair placement, and railing sightlines are settled on paper before any material is ordered.

The ledger is flashed and bolted into solid framing, never nailed to siding. Joists and beams are sized for the span, hardware is stainless or hot-dipped, and cut ends are sealed. The parts nobody sees decide how long the deck stands.

Decking and railing are specified for your exposure, whether that is open water, filtered shade, or full afternoon sun. Patios are set on a compacted base with real drainage, so bluestone and pavers stay level through freeze and thaw.
